Kid and Jess were both hunched over, out of breath.
Brian popped his head out, “Thanks guys, I …”
“Just get us out of here … and stay on dry land. Enough screwing around,” Jess snapped.
As they opened the back door to climb in, a cellular phone started ringing. Everybody reached for his or her phones at the same time. By process of elimination, it was Sarah’s.
“Hello? Hello?” Sarah answered. “Nobody there,” she said as she put down the phone. She looked at Kid, who shrugged his shoulders and jumped into the vehicle with Jess close behind.
Kid and Jess took off their soaked pants and threw them in the middle of the truck’s back floor. They quickly climbed under their respective blankets.
“At least hang them so they start to dry,” Maria said as she picked up Jess and Kid’s pants and hung them on hooks in the back of the vehicle. “The least you could do up there is crank the heat,” she yelled out. Brian quickly complied.
Kid spoke quietly to Sarah, “That could’ve been a disaster.” He rested his head against the back door and exhaled heavily.
From the rear of the vehicle, Kid was staring out the front windshield at the black sky over the ocean. The silence at that very moment was all consuming, as if a whisper in the wind could shatter an eardrum. Kid would never forget the stillness of that moment, and the sudden sinking feeling that followed.
All in the same instant, before Brian could drive away, the sky turned blinding red and the truck started fiercely vibrating.
The last thing Kid remembered seeing was a maze of red lines in the sky.
